Senior monk arrested and defrocked for rape after "corn porn" scandal

Eo Vanna, called Eam Vanna, is 38 years old and he was the head monk at the pagoda Wat Sambath, located in Banteay Sankat village, Sisophon City. He has been disgraced, after posts on social media showed him miming pornographic acts with a corn cob, in the company of a young woman.
On 5 June 2018, he was arrested for the rape and intimidation of the victim, a 19 year old girl. He had befriended her mother in order to take advantage of the daughter. He made her drink beer before he had sex with her, and told her not to tell anyone.

The ex-monk was officially defrocked in a public ceremony of shaming at the pagoda. Then he was taken away by police.

Monk kicked out for ‘affair’ with woman

The Banteay Meanchey Provincial Monk Committee on Tuesday defrocked Srel Vanna, a former chief monk at Phnom Bakleu pagoda, for allegedly having a love affair with a 19-year-old woman.

The deputy director of the provincial Cults and Religion Department, Prak Sophorth, said the committee of monks decided to defrock Vanna at 1:15pm on Tuesday, after they had investigated and questioned him since Monday.

“The Disciplinary Committee found evidence of violation of the monkhood, with a confession from the monk himself,” Sophorth said.

After questioning, Vanna, 36, admitted to having consensual sex “at the girl’s house, not at the pagoda”, Sophorth said.

However, he said the woman, only identified by her Facebook username of Nhom Lita, accused Vanna of raping her.

Monk defrocked amid rape accusations

A chief monk in Banteay Meanchey province was defrocked yesterday after a face-to-face meeting with a woman who said he raped her.
The pair were brought together by officials from the Provincial Department of Cults and Religions and the Banteay Meanchey provincial and Serey Sophoan Buddhist offices.

During the meeting, Ke Lita, 20, repeatedly alleged that Sril Vanna, chief monk of Phnom Bak Loeu pagoda in Banteay Meanchey province, raped her.

The meeting took place at Samathiphal Pagoda in Preah Vihear province, which organisers believed to be a sacred place for truth solicitation.

Mr Vanna got into trouble after video leaked by Ms Lita showed him licking corn in a sexual way at the request of Ms Lita, though her face was not revealed in the video.

Another images showed Mr Vanna gambling while in monk robes.

Ms Nita said she leaked the video in an attempt to bring the monk back to resolve the problem with her after he seemed to try to evade her after the alleged rape.

“I posted the video because I could not contact him for months after he raped me at my house. He turned off his phone number and even threatened to kill me if I posted that video,” she said.
