What was their nature of work?

No idea but the place looks like a recycling center or "scrappers" as we used to call them when we were nippers and "found" some copper boilers or lead guttering. Weigh it in. There are potentially some very toxic materials going into those places and the techniques used to recover valuable metals often involves all sorts of unsafe and polluting practices.

I've heard of barefoot doctors, but shoeless industrial workers? Mao would be impressed.

I'm just trying to imagine the scale of desperation of those who must work illegally in impoverished Cambodia to get ahead. It's just not coming.

I don't think you have much of a handle on what's happening here.
These people don't seem particularly desperate or impoverished,
they appear to be rather well-heeled, especially when they are
smashing their cars into road-dividers and tuk-tuks late at night.

If you're speaking generally, yes, but I'm speaking specifically of those in the photos with oil and dirt-stained clothing and surrounded by heaps of scrap metal.
