More than 40 Cambodians who have been convicted of crimes in the United States were deported and will arrive at Phnom Penh International Airport today.

According to General Department of Immigration spokesman Keo Vanthan, there are 43 people being deported to Cambodia.

“The final information is that 43 people, including three women, will arrive tomorrow,” he said.

Poor bastards.

a few days ago I saw a documentary about these people. They are really poor basterds! A few of them with very small petty crimes were deported and came, for them, in a fully unknown country, where they know no people, don't speak the language and without any money. Most of them end badly on drugs and alcohol.

Is this (USA) a developed country with a functional justice system? I think it is a violation of human rights deporting these people!

Anyone up for meeting them at the airport? We could easily put on a welcoming committee.
We could bring them to Ballsack Lane and afterwards you can invite them to stay at your house
while they get re-orientated.
I've known a few of these deportees over the years, and they weren't just "petty criminals",
they were nearly all fairly serious former gang members.
I'd be surprised if any of the bleeding-hearts on here had ever encountered any.

I hope to meet them. Do they have an established hangout in PP?

Yeah, as far as I'm aware these deportees have all been convicted of serious felonies and served prison sentences.

If only they took the initiative and pursued their citizenship in the US then they wouldn't be in this predicament. Most of these thugs probably arrived in the US as children. It's a shame that their families couldn't be arsed to sort out citizenship for themselves and/or their sprogs.

I'm sure that if I brought along a 3 year old son with me to the KOW and 15 years later he ran afoul in a serious way, he'd be ushered onto the first plane out after cooling his heels in Prey Sar for however long.

That's probably something their parents should have done. However many of the refugees from the camps were dumped in pretty rough neighborhoods.They found it hard to assimilate and most didn't pick up English too quickly. They likely didn't understand that they should register their kids or go through whatever process, and even if they did know they wouldn't know how to do it. Similar to one of us trying to negotiate paperwork here when most of us have only rudimentary Khmer speech and zero reading comprehension. The kids grew up understanding English, and some have thrived and done very well. Others didn't though, and that's why we have these returnees. I'm personally up for giving anyone a second chance but I'm also very wary of anyone I don't think I can trust. I knew one returnee for quite a while before I broached the topic of why he really was back here. Why he got deported was just a regular drug possession charge that he did a few years for. But then he told me about some of the other stuff he wasn't caught for, that gave me the creeps.
