Re: Kampot Dam Warning - Better Late than Never
Kampot dam alerts of possible flooding
13 July 2018
Teuk Chhou district police chief of staff Chhun Chheun told The Post that because the area has experienced heavy rains for several days straight, the Sinohydro Kamchay Hydroelectric Project Co Ltd on Wednesday issued the emergency announcement about the imminent opening of the spillway to run water out of the reservoir.
The announcement said water from the mountain and other streams into the reservoir was flowing at a rate of 1,450 cubic metres per second, steadily raising the water level.
Chheun said by Wednesday the water level reached 146.7 metres – just short of the 148.5- metre alert threshold that would trigger the spillway opening.
“The company had declared that it would open the spillway at 5pm on Wednesday, but as of 3pm on Thursday, it hadn’t done so.
“However, people living along creeks, canals and other water systems located in low areas around the hydroelectric dam have already been preparing for the impact,” he said.
Chheun said when the company does open the spillway, four communes located near the dam – Mak Brang, Kampong Kreng, Prey Khmum and Stung Keo – will face flooding issues.

Not entering into the debate of whether the dam is a good or bad thing, but surely people should not be living in potentially dangerous areas? Can the state not find them an alternative? Reminds me of people sleeping on train tracks.

It would be wonderful if the state did such a thing. But as with the residents of Boeung Kak lake and others, the alternative provided by the state is not the same.that genius wrote:Not entering into the debate of whether the dam is a good or bad thing, but surely people should not be living in potentially dangerous areas? The people sleeping on the train tracks aren’t around after a train passes through to sleep there again.
Lots of potentially dangerous areas in the world. California is one of them.

These include all the tourist/ expat blocks of land at the top of the river. Greenhouse etc.that genius wrote:Not entering into the debate of whether the dam is a good or bad thing, but surely people should not be living in potentially dangerous areas? I know of a block of land there, around 4000 square meters, for sale at over half a million.
The funny thing is in the advertising which promotes the block being " bigger" as it backs onto the river and thus gets some ' extra ' land.
Currently said block is perhaps 30% flooded.... Lol.
