China to Hold Second Military Exercises With Cambodia

Jan. 24, 2018, at 8:00 a.m.
PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - China will hold its second military exercise with Cambodia in March focusing on counter terrorism, the Cambodian army said on Wednesday, in another sign of the Southeast Asian country strengthening ties with Beijing.

The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces said in a statement the exercise would involve 280 Cambodian and 190 Chinese soldiers, celebrating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.

China held the first joint naval drill with Cambodia in 2016, tightening the relationship that could give Beijing a small but strategic foothold in a region being strongly courted by the United States.

Cambodia's armed forces have benefited greatly from Chinese military training and equipment including jeeps, rocket launchers and helicopters.

Cambodia suspended joint military exercises with the United States last year indefinitely, saying that they were too busy preparing for local elections.

Defence Minister General Tea Banh yesterday confirmed that China is to provide the army with tanks and armoured personnel carriers to strengthen relations between the two militaries.

He said the tanks and APCs would arrive in Cambodia in March, when the two countries will hold their second joint “Golden Dragon” military exercise.

According to a report on BTV television yesterday, China will provide about 100 tanks and APCs to the Defence Ministry’s Brigade 70.

General Ith Sarath, deputy commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, last week said the Golden Dragon military exercise would be held in March in Kampong Speu province’s Phnom Sruoch district.

280 Cambodian troops and 190 Chinese troops, does not make a exercise. That's just a small party. Probably someone's getting married.

Armoured carriers due for joint China exercise
6 March 2018
About 30 armoured personnel carriers from China will arrive in Cambodia next week several days before a joint military exercise is due to be held on March 17.

According to BTV news, a military officer said that about 30 armoured personnel carriers and other vehicles from China were scheduled to arrive in Cambodia on March 13 and 14.

A senior military officer at the Defence Ministry said China would bring some armoured personnel carriers, three helicopters and other vehicles to join the exercise between Cambodia and China in Kampong Speu province.
The officer noted that the armoured personnel carriers, helicopters and other vehicles were being brought only for participation in the exercise and were not being donated.

Prime Minister HE last week said that tonnes of weapons were shipped to Cambodia to bolster the nation’s national defence a day after the United States announced that it would be reining back aid programmes, including military aid, because of perceived democratic setbacks.

War games: Ministry says 'please don't be alarmed' as it announces Golden Dragon military exercise with China
8 March 2018
Cambodia's Golden Dragon military training exercises with China will be held March 15 to March 30 in Kampong Speu and the Ministry of Defence today warned civilians and aircraft to avoid the area.

The exercises will feature 190 soldiers from the Chinese People's Liberation Army and 280 from the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, an increase of about 100 soldiers on the Chinese side, the Ministry announced.

“Please don’t be alarmed,” the announcement states, cautioning that there will be “live round” exercises.

The release also bans “people from coming too close to that area and all flights across the area during that time”.
