- The family of a woman killed by a falling rock at a quarry in Tbong Khmum province has received $11,000 and funeral expenses in exchange for not filing a complaint against the firm involved, police said yesterday.
The company belonging to tycoon Lim Bunna was licensed to break rocks using explosives at the site in Tbong Khmum district’s Chiro 2.
On Friday, a rock hit the victim Kheng Samnang, 34, following an explosion, killing her instantly.
A Tbong Khmum district police officer said the case had been closed following extrajudicial compensation provided to the victim’s family. “The victim’s family agreed to accept compensation from the company in exchange for not filing a complaint,” he said.
Lim Bunna company representative Veng Ly said the victim was partly to blame.
“We sound a siren before explosions. She was walking to an engagement ceremony and the siren had already gone off. She was about 200 metres within the company’s land. People are supposed to stay away after the siren goes off. The safe distance is 500 metres,” he said...
