PHNOM PENH - A DJ was injured when gunshots were fired at 6 am on November 29 at the Rocky Center located along Preah Monivong Boulevard Tonle Bassac, Khan Chamkar Morn, located at the Rock Entertainment Center, causing both the Royal Gendarmerie and Khan Chamkar Morn authorities to be called out.

The victim has been identified as DJ Bee Sam Oeun, aged 32, who received a gunshot wound in his right ankle. The principal suspect in the shooting has been named as Rith Khanh Nhanh, 30 years old, who is reputed to be the son of a big man, and was allegedly found in possession of a handgun that had been discharged. It is reported that this is not the first time the suspect and his gangster friends have caused problems at this club, but they have always been protected by their connections.

Police are hunting a military officer and son of a high-ranking government official over a Phnom Penh music venue shooting in which a DJ was seriously injured.

The shooting took place early yesterday at the Rock Centre in Chamkarmon district’s Tonle Bassac commune.

District military police officer Ly Vireak said the suspect was Duch Sovannareth, the son of a secretary of state at the Ministry of National Assembly-Senate Relations and Inspection.

The victim was Bear Sam Oeun, 33, a DJ at the Rock Centre. He was injured in the right leg and hand.

Mr Vireak said that according to witnesses and military police investigations, the suspect and two friends went on Tuesday to the Rock Centre. They drank and danced until early on Wednesday.

They got into an argument with Mr Sam Oeun for not playing the music they requested.
“During the argument, the suspect took a pistol and fired five bullets towards the floor, in front of the victim’s legs to threaten him,” Mr Vireak said.“The bullets hit the victim’s leg and hand.

“After the shooting, the suspect and his friends fled. One of the suspect group was arrested by military police,” he said. Based on the answers of the arrested man, military police identified the gunman as Mr Sovannareth.

Two more suspects have been arrested at noon today in Kampong Thom province in connection with the shooting at the Rock Entertainment Centre in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 29 November.




It was early reported that Duch Sovannareth, the son of a secretary of state at the Ministry of National Assembly-Senate Relations and Inspection,was arrested and that he is currently in detention. The site of the shooting, the Rock Entertainment Centre, belongs to the well-known Royal Group, and the CEO is Oknha Kith Thieng.
It is therefore not surprising that Lieutenant General Sok Khemrin said today that the police are taking this case extremely seriously.
