Women Sued Over $20K and 300K Business Losses

On 9 February, 2023, Phnom Penh Municipal Court heard two separate cases of Cambodian 'businesswomen' who are being sued for fraud because they cannot repay loans:
Case 1: $20,000

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): The criminal police force of the Ministry of Interior, on February 9, 2023 arrested and sent a suspect to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning in connection with a case of fraud.
According to the report of the criminal police of the Ministry of Interior, the suspect is 28-year-old Sok Sophea, a saleswoman living at 11 E0, Street 356, in Sangkat Tuol Svay Prey 2, Khan Boeung Keng Kang, Phnom Penh.

The saleswoman was arrested following a complaint by two victims of a fraud involving more than 20,000 US dollars. The suspect borrowed the money from the two plaintiffs to start a business, but when the business failed last September, the woman was unable to repay her debt. The victims are suing in an attempt to recover their money.
Currently, the suspect woman has been sent to the court and is still being questioned by the prosecutor.

Case 2: $300,000

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): Police from the Criminal Police Department of the Ministry of Interior on February 9, 2023 arrested a business woman and sent her to the Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning in connection with a case of non-compliance, where she knowingly wrote a dud check for $300,000 in Phnom Penh during September 2022.

The suspect is 27-year-old Sithikun Saktinita, a saleswoman living in Borey Piphop Thmey, Dangkor District. Phnom Penh. She was arrested on a warrant issued by Mr. Chreng Khmao, a prosecutor with the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, following a complaint filed by the victim.
