PHNOM PENH - Students of the University of Health Sciences on Tuesday posted a petition to Prime Minister HE’s Facebook page asking for his intervention to change their failed exit exam grades to passes because they are committed to their professions.

According to the petition, 35 students failed the exit exam to become doctors and dentists and want their grades changed, leading to much criticism from other Facebook users.

Soum Maborit, a student who signed the petition, said that the failing students believe they received low grades because the Health Ministry had a quota on how many students can pass. “The 35 students who failed the exam are requesting passing grades because they really love their professions,” he added.

Sen Lim Nov, chief of the National Exam Committee, declined to comment.

It's just not fair! The money their poor parents have lost, so little Socheat wouldn't have to go to all of those stressful classes.
"We want fairness. There is no fairness if you do not let us cheat."

The students don't seem to understand the point of examinations.Or that 'loving your profession' doesn't make you capable or competent. :?

Well, good luck to the Minister of Education and his reforms. He has a massive task in front of him.

Failed medical students tried the same stunt several years ago and were successful, which explains the latest attempt. On that occasion, HE agreed to allow them to be re-examined. It happened at the same time when Dr. Hang was launching his campaign to eliminate cheating in secondary final exams. It seems to indicate a certain a certain dichotomy in government circles in relation to ethical principles.

This is from a thread from last year. Things haven't changed much. As Gilmore says, on the one hand, the Education Minister is trying to raise education standards, while on the other, the PM is giving away free exam passes. It's not really the kids' fault if they don't understand the exam system.
Failing medical students ask HE for help

Fifty medical students from Phnom Penh’s Royal University of Health Science have posted on Prime Minister HE’s Facebook page asking him to allow them to pass their exams despite having failed.

Some of the students had failed their clinical exams – required to advance in their medical degrees – two or three times and wanted the prime minister to waive the results, the comment posted on Monday said.

Let's not forget little Seav Mey with her free grade 12... It's a common problem throughout Cambodia. Everyone feels entitled to getting something without having to work for it, especially when it comes to education.

Having a quota is good, it ensures you get the best of the best. Try again next year... Anyways, here's it probably ensures the richest pass. A friend of mine who just completed her med courses a few months ago and can finally be called "doctor" told me that most pay to get their PHDs written for them or else they can't pass. $3000 she said it was. As with lawyers, you need $$$ to get "qualified". They then think it's weird or discrimination when neighbouring countries don't recognise their degrees...

No, they most likely won't be any worse, the issue is that Cambodia needs good ones whose competence approaches true professionalism. I don't know how many times I was treated by "doctors" who were incapable of reading or analyzing the results of some shiny new apparatus donated by an NGO.

No, never heard of that, 25% is a fail in any university.
