there are cafes springing up out in the area around the international village in andoung khmer across the river from Kampot.
still houses to rent in the countryside for less than 150/month

The point is Frank for how long. I would not want to take on a house and then find, one or two months down the line the rent as doubled, or it is now on monthly lease.

The only way to avoid it is to specify a long lease with your landlord, but as you know, that doesn't count for as much as it would back home.

In any event, would you enjoy being surrounded by Chinese neighbours?

Enjoy noise and spitting much?

It is not just expats and westerners who are the recipients of shitty rental rises and evictions, it is a lot of the Khmer stall holders and small business owners who rent building space losing livelihoods and "homes " they have had for years. Friends who previously went to Snookyville for holidays to escape PP say it is getting too expensive for them.
Sad when a counties citizens get to take second place to foreigners.

Cambodia expecting influx of Chinese investment
Tue, 31 October 2017
Cambodia should expect a massive influx of Chinese investment and development assistance given its geopolitical importance to Beijing and its favoured status under China’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative, policymakers claimed yesterday.

Speaking at a seminar yesterday meant to bolster Cambodia’s status within China’s grand economic policy, Guoyou Song, executive director at the Shanghai-based Asia-Pacific Research Center, said that China is the Kingdom’s most important strategic and economic partner.

“China, nowadays, is willing to provide funds to other countries in multiple ways,” he said. “So, it will be good for the Cambodian economy.”
China is Cambodia’s main source for foreign direct investment, with $19.2 billion invested into the Kingdom between 1994 and 2014, according to a survey released by the National Bank of Cambodia and the National Institute of Statistics last year.
