Breaking: LAC approves minimum wage hike

The government today set next year’s minimum wage for the garment and footwear sector at $170 a month, up from $153, the highest increase in wages in the last two years.

The tripartite Labour Advisory Committee – consisting of representatives from the government, unions and employers – went into the meeting with their own wage proposals: $165, $170 and $162, respectively.

The committee this afternoon selected the government proposal of $165, after which Prime Minister declared a now-customary $5 bump, bringing next year’s wage to $170. The increase is the highest in the last two years and comes 10 months before a critical national election in July 2018...

not bad; they are raising the min wage in Myanmar as well
from 4,000 kyat to 4,800 kayat/day $3.60!!! $94/month......26 days/month working
vs Thailand's 300 baht/day $9 ($234) but to put in perspective, working at 7/11 pays starting 12,000 baht/month ( $360) ) 1 day off/week

BUT is that enough??
I was up at the Migrant labor office in Aranyaprathet to have my gf wp id issued on monday, was also up there in May.
Was told by officials that they process over 600 workers/DAY and have been doing so for over 18 months now.
Thats a huge amount of workers leaving Cambodia cause the wages are NOT enough
My gf gets free medical care here, if she has a baby its free plus 3 months paid leave, more than her own goverment provides.

Same goes for Myanmar where over 1,000 workers/day travel over to work and have been for decades

In fact IF Thailand closed its borders to migrant workers the construction,garment and fishing industries would collapse.

Just four cents from every dollar Australians spend on clothing makes it back to workers enduring “horrific” conditions in garment factories, a new report has found.

The report adds to pressure on Australia’s big clothing retailers, including Kmart, Big W, and Target, to act faster on their ethical sourcing programs.

An analysis of clothing supply chains, conducted by Deloitte for Oxfam Australia, shows just 4% of what Australians spend on clothing goes to the wages of workers in garment factories across the globe. In Bangladesh, it’s as low as 2%.

Bumping up the price of clothing by just 1% would be enough to give garment workers a living wage, the analysis found. That is only 20 cents extra for a $20 t-shirt...

1% seems like nothing in the western world. So the end buyer foots the bill for overseas underpaid factory workers and their bosses.
Would it be reasonable for the factory seller to raise the 1% to the consumer. Oxfam and the likes do good work and awareness, but they too get their pay deal to their organizations.

There is no need to pass on the 1% to the consumer. Why can't the owners absorb it? Why is this never even considered as an option? Oh, but we don't have the money..buys 2 new SUVs in one year.

Haha, sorry, really, just being a smart ass ... That's a far extreme, granted.

With new taxes on these new "investor citizens" working at the factory, I suppose the raises will chiefly go to improvements. We need them, and the factories are essentially going long-term, seeking to recoup later, with better facilities, output, etc.

As we see now in "infallible America," too many taxes and egregious pork programs forced businesses out. Some will not return.

Then Bangladeshis will jump for joy so high, it could knock their turbans off. :/

I hope payroll includes *money planning* for their workers. Could good intentions ever go wrong?

I am wary of pre-election handouts, but in this case, it may be for the good.

Bangladeshis get government subsidised wages. Pretty sure they don't wear turbans.

i have been told by Khmers that the big SEZ near SV cannot find enough workers- the ones they have are said to be from other poorer provinces.
