Phnom Penh cops plan crackdown on parking
Police in Phnom Penh will next month start issuing fines of up to $25 for violations of parking regulations by using handheld devices that scan licence plates and recognise the registered identity and address of a vehicle’s owner, an official said yesterday.

Run Rothveasna, director of the Interior Ministry’s Traffic and Public Order Department, said that wrongdoers would face fines between 50,000 to 100,000 riel (about $12.50 to $25) depending on the vehicle, withdrawal of their driver’s licence or even court proceedings. “We are training traffic police officials about the use of technology via the sophisticated system,” Rothveasna said of the handheld devices. “They will also tow vehicles.”

The news is from July but what is surprising is that they have actually started to enforce this at least to some extent. Police have issued parking fines for cars parked illegally on streets near the Canadia tower. Though fine is only ~$7 instead of the $12,5-25 said on the article.

one can assume that number plate-less vehicles and the "special " people will still be allowed to park anywhere they want.

What about all the cars without license plates? And all the "VIP" cars? And all the RCAF cars?

Governor wants vehicles cleared from pavements

The Phnom Penh Governor has warned motorists that authorities will be taking strict action against illegally parked vehicles, especially those on pavements impeding the passage of pedestrians.

Governor Khoung Sreng said some business locations and schools still allow vehicles to park on the pavement, which affects public order, and noted he has ordered district authorities to take action.

“The municipality has now provided another two tow trucks to Sen Sok and Por Senchey district halls,” he added. “So, these district halls have to resolve this issue in their areas.”

Crackdown imminent for disorderly parking in capital

City Hall officials and police officers will soon start cracking down on vehicle owners who park indiscriminately and endanger the safety of other road users in all 12 districts in the capital.

City Hall officials, led by Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng, on Tuesday met with police officers to discuss ways to improve the traffic flow in the capital.

City Hall spokesman Met Meas Pheakdey said yesterday that the meeting focused on ways to strictly enforce laws, including towing away cars parked indiscriminately, especially on the sides of 11 main roads in the capital.

Mr Meas Pheakdey said that City Hall has been promoting the disadvantages of parking on the road, and the benefits of not doing so, for about a year through the media.

“This problem has been advertised for one year already since His Excellency Khuong Sreng took office,” he said. “So far, we have adopted the soft approach by educating people not to park their vehicles in a disorderly way.”

“We have done so for about a year and even made videos showing people how indiscriminate parking causes traffic congestion and even leads to deadly accidents,” he added.

Mr Meas Pheakdey said that the police are carrying out regular enforcement on the 11 main roads, but it was now time to fully crack down on errant motorists to reduce accidents and congestion in all 12 districts.

Yea, Yea, we all know that, now can we get back to concentrating on a better rubbish collection service and a sewer treatment system and a better free education system and a

people can't handle the truth

Post election clean up. They do need to get this going because of the looming games. Get everyone used to parking legally before 2023.

Of course, VIPs will wrack up thousands in unpaid fines...but will they dare boot or tow? Exciting times ahead!!!
