Kratie forestry chief to be "reassigned" amid bribery scandal

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

7 July 2017
Over the past few weeks, local media reports in the province have accused chief of the Kratie Forestry Administration Bouy Ratana of colluding with timber traders by taking bribes to allow them to log wood illegally. Yesterday, it was revealed that Mr Ratana was to lose his position.

Contacted by phone yesterday, Kratie provincial governor Sar Chamrong said that Mr Ratana was not being fired, or demoted, but rather reassigned.
Mr Chamrong declined to discuss the allegations of collusion and said that Mr Ratana’s reassignment was “normal procedure”, and not linked to the accusations made in local media reports.

“I would like to give a short answer that there is no removal from his position, it is just that he was moved from one district to another,” said Mr Chamrong, declining to give further details.
“The change is a normal,” he added. “There is no reason behind it.”

Mr Chamrong then accused the Khmer Times of colluding with other media organisations to draw inaccurate conclusions.
“There have been four newspapers asking me the same question today,” he said...

Could you please stop talking about this ? The provincial governor of Kratie would like the media to stop asking questions about the transfer of the chief of the Kratie district Forestry Administration. [But at least the governor is not "too busy to come to the phone" like many officials.]

Kratie district FA official transferred to new post
Fri, 7 July 2017
A Kratie district Forestry Administration official was transferred to another district in the province amid rumours, reported in local media, of his involvement in illegal logging.
Buy Ratana, chief of the Forestry Administration in Kratie district, in Kratie province, will transfer to the same position in Prek Prasap district next week. Local media yesterday reported allegations that Ratana was helping transport illegal timber to Vietnam.

Ratana couldn’t be reached for comment, but Sor Chamrong, provincial governor, said Ratana had been transferred because he had completed his three-year mandate in Kratie district, and denied the allegations.
“There is nothing related to him engaging in illegal transportation [of timber],” he said. “It’s useless to keep digging . . . Writing about this is not beneficial – it could affect the official’s reputation.” ...

It could affect his reputation?! Nice of them to reassign him to another district where he can likely keep the logging alive. Cambodia is doomed.

Forestry official faces 15 years
18 August 2017
A Kratie Forestry Administration official filmed demanding bribes from smugglers of logged wood used for pepper farming has been arrested and charged with forestry offences and abuse of power, and faces up to 15 years in prison if found guilty, officials said yesterday.

Khoun Chivin, an officer in Chhlong district, was filmed demanding $10 per vanload of the wood used as supporting stakes on pepper farms, but was initially only transferred to a job in the provincial Forestry Administration for “education” against demanding bribes.

However, Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) Chairman Om Yentieng said Chivin was arrested by the ACU on Wednesday evening and sent to the provincial court...

Would the same arguments be used if said officer was linked to CNRP?

I
Somebody should hand the government the estimated tax bill for all the wood and sand that have been purloined in the last 5 years.
Nothing political you understand, we just want them to pay a lot of money in back tax. And seeing as it was a crime, all their ill-gotten gains should be confiscated.
See crook!!!

I saw exactly the same thing happen in Thailand, just wondering if it's a SE Asian thing
