Motorists face insurance law
4 August 2017
National police officials yesterday said that all vehicle owners will soon be required to purchase insurance for their vehicles.
Him Yan, national deputy police chief, told 120 provincial police officials from 12 provinces of the development during a training course of traffic accident investigations.
“Currently, Chinese and Thai companies are in contact with the National Police to create insurance for all types of vehicles,” Mr Yan said.

Mr Yan said that a motorbike owner would pay $17 per year and owners of small cars $70, while owners of large vehicles would pay $80 per year.

“If the motor driver gets into an accident causing injuries, the company will pay out $580 and if there is a death involved, the company will pay $3,000,” Mr Yan said.

Mr Yan added that a timeline has not yet been set for the implementation of the goal to outfit all drivers with insurance...

What will be the rate of the insurance cost per year for the expat?
At a wild guess 100% more then quoted.

Comprehensive for a car was about $350, cheap compared to the alternative.

What alternative?
I don't see the comparison with the above $350 to the quoted $80 above.

The alternative of paying directly from your pocket for the other's repair bills, and/or funeral expense.

A few weeks ago a expat on his moto was hit by a Cambodian car. Leaving him on the road with a broken leg. The driver of the car drove away. You would presume the driver didn't have insurance. Or this is just the norm.

lol - The locals will avoid insurance like the plague. Hit and run is the game. The fuckers need educating first with driving skills.
