id be interested to know the comparasion of suiside rates in compared to the us/uk as there seems to be so many, but then again it doesnt get broadcast in the same way it does over here so im not sure how much more common it is or not, guess the thoughts of Samsara make their decision a bit easier i guess?

Media in other countries don't report suicides because reports of suicide lead to higher rates of suicide. We get these reports because CEOCambodiaNews has decided to not follow traditional journalist ethics. Of course it will seem popular, but less than a dozen a week in a country of this size is really not that much.Jamie_Lambo wrote:id be interested to know the comparasion of suiside rates in compared to the us/uk as there seems to be so many, but then again it doesnt get broadcast in the same way it does over here so im not sure how much more common it is or not, guess the thoughts of Samsara make their decision a bit easier i guess?
Perhaps CEOCambodiaNews could have a personal discussion with itself and find out if these reportings should continue.
Cambodia Expats Online Cambodia News, funny name by the way.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copycat_s ... _reportingPublishing the means of suicides, romanticized and sensationalized reporting, particularly about celebrities, suggestions that there is an epidemic, glorifying the deceased and simplifying the reasons all lead to increases in the suicide rate. People may see suicide as a glamorous ending — with youth getting a lot of attention, lots of sympathy, lots of national concern that they never got in life. The second possible factor is that vulnerable youth may feel like, "If they couldn't cut it, neither can I".[8] Increased rate of suicides has been shown to occur up to ten days after a television report.[9] Studies in Japan[10] and Germany[11] have replicated findings of an imitative effect. Etzersdorfer et al.[12] in an Austrian study showed a strong correlation between the number of papers distributed in various areas and the number of subsequent firearm suicides in each area after a related media report. Higher rates of copycat suicides have been found in those with similarities in race,[10] age, and gender[13] to the victim in the original report.
Regarding suicide rates here vs other countries, well, there is no epidemic:
2 South Korea
11 India
16 Hungary
17 Japan
43 Somalia
50 United States of America
58 Sweden
75 Cambodia
81 Norway
82 Laos

I don't see that report as romanticizing or sensationalizing suicide; it's a tragic account of a feeling of impotence in the face of poverty not a flag being raised to follow in his footsteps...

Siucide is the ultimate flag that society is failing, and we should always be aware of it. Not publishing it is probably the kind of thing Singapore/Malaysia/China would consider.

Hanging themselves is popular way of suicide? But respect them that they didn't run into the cars or something else. R.I.P!
