A Dutchman and an American were each sentenced to one year in prison yesterday for the theft of 17 cartons of cigarettes from Paragon Supermarket in Daun Penh district in March.

Kim Rath Narin, Phnom Penh Municipal Court judge, said that Johan Becker, 59, a Dutch tourist, and Jeffery Alan Adams, 51, an American tourist, were convicted and ordered to jointly pay $1,963 in damages to the plaintiff and another $1,000 in compensation.

“They will be deported from Cambodia as soon as they have served out their sentences,” Narin said.

On March 7, 2014, according to Chhun Kaony, deputy police chief of Chey Chumneas commune, where the market is located, Becker stole a variety of cigarette brands: 49 packs of Mild Sevens, 41 packs of Marlboros, and some Cambodian Angkor cigarettes, among others. Becker loaded the stolen goods into some bags, which he then gave to his friend Adams who walked behind him as they attempted to escape the market.

FFS, stealing cigarettes in a country where they cost next to nothing? Dumbfucks. But 1 year in prison for such a crime also seems a bit over the top.

Weird! Something doesn't sound right, even a chain smoker doesn't do that. I know that at Lucky supermarkets, if you are caught shoplifting you will be penalized 11 times of the cost of the stolen goods after you get a couple slaps and smack in the face by the staff. If you dont have the penalized money upfront, a prison cop will be called, who from what I heard take joy in beating up people.

A year in prison for a couple carton of smokes? Thats fucking harsh. Maybe the cops and the Judge wanted to serve it as an example or make names for themselves. Anyone, once they are in the slam, they will likely to pay 2 or more times the original penalty to get out.

But at the same time though, some petty crimes committed by the locals are treated worse.
