Swimming lessons ? :please: So many kids drowning, and those canals are so dangerous when full of water.

Three siblings drown in Siem Reap canal

Tue, 23 August 2016
Kim Sarom

A Siem Reap family lost three of their four children on Sunday when a swimming outing in a canal turned deadly.

Puok district police chief Pet Pumsen said the three deceased were Rangsy, 12, Raksa, 8, and Sovan Panha, 5, of the Keo family. The three had gone swimming with their older sister, Keo Pich Choranai, 16, and cousin Vy Vicheka, 7, in a 4-metre-deep canal in the district’s Sososdom commune.

Keo Phally, 44, the victims’ father, said he and his wife had not permitted their children to swim in the canal when they asked, but they had accompanied their elder sister anyway.

Phally said Choranai screamed for help when two of her younger siblings first slid into the canal, rushing from the shallow area to help them. She only managed to pull their cousin to safety.

The youngest sibling followed the first two into the water, also drowning.

The family has prepared a funeral with assistance from the Siem Reap Red Cross, which gave 1.5 million riel ($366), and provincial lawmaker Seang Nam, who donated $1,000 to the bereaved.

Three Siblings Drown in Siem Reap Irrigation Canal

by Phan Soumy | August 23, 2016

Three siblings playing in an irrigation canal swollen by recent flooding drowned on Sunday in Siem Reap province, police said on Monday.

The children—Keopich Sovanpanha, 5, Keopich Raksa, 8, and Keopich Raingsey, 14—had gone to the canal with an older sister and a cousin, Puok district police chief Tep Pumsen said.

“They were swimming together,” Mr. Pumsen said. “When the older sister saw her siblings drowning she went over to help.”

I guess that "full" is not opposed to empty here :
an irrigation canal swollen by recent flooding
Like the rivers, the canals are more dangerous after flooding and it's not a safe place for kids to play. Yes, duh, but unfortunately some people have not got the message.

The rainy season adds four more kids to drowning figures - 4 more in one day and 16 this month... so far. Terrible.

Four more drowning fatalities
Fri, 21 October 2016
Khouth Sophak Chakrya

Four children aged between 8 and 12 died in separate drowning incidents in three different provinces on Wednesday, increasing the number of drowning deaths to 16 so far this month.

In one case in Kampong Chhnang province, two boys – identified as Chea Phanit, 9, and Yon Narong, 10 – were cycling in Rolea Ba’ier district’s Chrey Bakk commune with another 9-year-old boy when their bikes veered off a bridge, causing them to fall into the rapidly flowing water and drown...

They are pretty dangerous a lot of the time. Mud/ swamp is even harder to swim in than water (as in impossible).
Drowning is one of the leading causes of death among young people here, so there needs to be more attention paid to swimming training.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Three children drown in separate incidents
Wed, 24 May 2017
Three children drowned in two separate cases on Monday morning in Kampong Thom and Battambang provinces.

Kampong Svay District Deputy Police Chief Sin Linh said yesterday that the victims in Kampong Thom, Im Sokna, 11, and Vorng Chor, 13, were collecting morning glory and snails along the river for their mothers to sell in the market when the incident happened.
“According to the site examination, while both of them were picking morning glory and snails, one of them might have slipped into the river and then the other tried to help, but the attempt failed [and] as a result they drowned,” Linh said.

In Battambang province, Sampov Loun District Police Chief Pich Saren said that 3-year-old Yem Yi drowned in a pond located in front of his home while his mother was busy cooking.

A 2014 WHO study found that the risk of drowning for children under the age of 15 was twice as high in Cambodia as it was in other low- to middle-income countries in the region.

This is really unfortunate. ''Tis the season :(. I certainly don't hope to start hearing of drownings here in Sihanoukville.
