Dam opened in Kampong Speu amid heavy flooding across the region.

The homes of nearly 400 families in six communes within Kampong Speu province’s Dangkor district were flooded after days of rain and the opening of the 7 Makara dam, which caused the overflow of the nearby Prek Thnout dam and flooding in surrounding villages.
Mok Puthea, the administrative chief of Dangkor district, said the government had no other option but to open the dam after heavy rain pounded the area for days on end.
“The floods are not as strong as before and recently the water has started to recede gradually,” he said. “Tonight, if the waters don’t increase, it will recede by half a meter to a meter.”
Mr. Puthea said the communes affected by the floods were Kong Noy, Spean Thmor, Tean, Sak Sampov, Prey Veng and Prey Sar. The water in Prek Kampers commune receded yesterday, he said.
