A Royal Railway cargo train derailed in Kandal province yesterday and partially plunged into a nearby canal as it was traveling from Preah Sihanouk province to Phnom Penh, police said.

Kandal province’s police chief Major General Eav Chamroeun said on Facebook that the accident was a result of the train’s sudden braking, resulting in seven cars leaving the tracks.

“The train was braking to reduce its speed. That caused the seven cars, which were not carrying any goods, to derail from its tracks, falling into the canal,” he said, adding that no one was injured in the accident.

He added that Royal Railway will not be facing any charges and the company will be responsible for repairing the train as well as any damage to the tracks...

The reason for the accident has still not been determined. Theories abound.

Cargo Train Derails in Kandal; Royal Railways Not Concerned
by Phan Soumy | November 30, 2016 |

Several empty wagons of a cargo train came off the rails on Tuesday morning as they passed through Kandal province on the way from Sihanoukville to the Phnom Penh dry port, according to local authorities and Royal Railways, the service operator.

The accident, which occurred 50 meters from Ang Klor village at about 4:30 a.m., injured no one but alarmed residents, who have long been concerned for their animals and their own lives, said village chief Um Sophea...

In the aftermath of Tuesday’s derailment, Mr. Sophea said, villagers discovered that a meter of the rail was missing. He speculated that the gap had probably caused the accident.

It was the first time a train has come off the rails since a commercial passenger train service was re-launched between Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville earlier this year.

A meter of rail was missing!

Of course no-one heard an angle grinder cutting the rail. It's a total mystery.
