Stung Treng provincial police arrested a man on Monday after he was found in possession of almost one kilogram of drugs, a senior officer said yesterday.

Provincial police chief Brigadier General Mao Dara said that Leng Tak, 42, was arrested in Siem Pang district with 864.3 grams of crystal methamphetamine.

“He [Mr. Tak] was a drug dealer and was arrested by our provincial police with evidence of his smuggling drugs from Laos to be sold in Stung Treng,” said Brig. Gen. Dara.

“Yesterday, we sent him to the court for further legal action in accordance with Cambodian laws,” he said, adding that Mr. Tak had been trafficking drugs in the province for a Lao ringleader for months before police made the arrest.

Brig. Gen. Dara added that police were still searching for the suspect’s accomplices who managed to escape.

Last month, several civil society groups expressed concern that Cambodia was fast becoming a drug trafficking and production hub, citing the increase in the number of reported drug trafficking cases.
