International News Outlet Picked Up Fake News by Times of Cambodia

Clown Steps on Landmine (But Not Really)

News readers around the world were told over the weekend of a freak accident in which a prankster dressed as a clown stepped on an unexploded ordnance (UXO) in Oddar Meanchey province’s Samraong City.

Some news outlets called it the first fatality in a global clown craze that began in the U.S. in August. But the bizarre incident, first reported on the Times of Cambodia website, never happened, according to local officials.

“It didn’t happen. I absolutely deny the information,” provincial police chief Men Ly said on Sunday.

Yeah I was wondering about the intentions of the Times of Cambodia site - just for the lolz ?
In that case, good catch of international trash media news.

However, the CD article is not entirely correct in citing Reddit here :

Various media outlets continued to propel the story over the weekend, and it even gained traction on Reddit, a discussion forum that bills itself as “the front page of the internet.”

The Reddit discussion forum very promptly called Times of Cambodia a fake news site at least 4 days ago - even before the story was taken up by international media, who would have done well to check it out before publishing. I had a look as soon as JB posted the story on CEO (as ajoke) last Wednesday and the fake accusations came up right away on Reddit :
