A major in the Defense Ministry’s Espionage Research Department was arrested on Saturday night after drunkenly shooting his pistol into the air outside his house in Phnom Penh, police said yesterday.

Major Ly Menghy, 49, was arrested by military police at 11pm at his house in Prampi Makara district’s Monorom commune, after police were alerted to the burst of gunfire, explained district military police officer Captain Seng Bunrith.

“He got drunk. He came outside his house and fired three bullets into the air,” he told Khmer Times.

“After the shooting, he re-entered his house and continued drinking.”

Captain Bunrith added that Maj. Menghy, who was now detained at the municipal Military Police headquarters, was due to face further questioning today about the incident...http://www.khmertimeskh.com/news/28155/ ... n-the-air/

Another soldier/policeman arrested for shooting off his firearm while drunk. I thought this was an acceptable local custom, but there have been a number of articles in the news recently where the police have been called and the officer arrested...
Elite Soldier Charged For Unlawfully Firing Gun
by Phan Soumy | October 3, 2016

Kompong Leng district police chief Pal Choeun said Yun Saniya, 32, a Brigade 911 soldier based in Preah Vihear province, was visiting his wife and her family in Pur commune for the Pchum Ben holiday.

When Mr. Saniya’s brother-in-law invited a friend—Nop Kongkea, 22—over to drink with him, Mr. Saniya threatened to shoot the man, he said.

As the friend approached the stairs leading up to the house, the soldier shouted at him: “I don’t like messing around—if you climb up I will fire,” before firing his handgun once, Mr. Choen said.

He faces six months to two years in prison.

Of all the random idiots firing into the air we never hear of the effects of gravity.
Why is that?

A study by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that 80% of celebratory gunfire-related injuries are to the head, feet, and shoulders.[4] In Puerto Rico, about two people die and about 25 more are injured each year from celebratory gunfire on New Year's Eve, the CDC says.[5] Between the years 1985 and 1992, doctors at the King/Drew Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, treated some 118 people for random falling-bullet injuries. Thirty-eight of them died.[6]

Check this Mythbusters film, on this one they actually measure the the height a bullet reaches if fired vertically and its terminal velocity. A 9mm was clocked at 3250 feet with a terminal velocity of 150 feet/second.
