this is a good thing. I've notice a lot less congestion along st 154 towards the river/wat area. much easier to walk there now.

Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng yesterday urged Phnom Penh authorities to rein in street vendors dominating roads and pavements, claiming they cause traffic congestion and created an eyesore for tourists.

cheers

Thanks to piss poor or no planning at all, band aid solutions like this won't work. The sidewalk vendors are there out of financial necessity and the rich park on the sidewalks and double park on narrow streets out of arrogance. Add delivery trucks to this along with traffic congestion and the mess increases dramatically. Phnom Penh is beyond the help of city planning at this point. Oh yeah, those traffic barricades manned by the men in blue contribute as well. Phnom Penh has outgrown its britches thanks to no foresight.

"u need a socialistic government to force unpopular policies and muscle to uproot lots of communities to implement city planning"

Only if it's too late. What is really called for is intelligent planning that anticipates those problems.

It really isn't the street vendors that are the problem, it's the SUVs.

no such thing as intelligent planning, man cannot foresee the future, only god can, :D so what cambodia needs is a iron man / woman with iron fist to do the right thing, after all the right things have been done then a coup or revolution to over throw him / her

Interesting, an iron dictator overthrown in a revolution because of traffic congestion and a god unwilling to get involved. Do you teach both political history and city planning locally? If not, can you cite a precedent for your claim?

"Ever tried walking in HCMC or Ha Noi?". It's been over 15 years since I lived in Saigon. It was horrible then and I can't imagine dealing with it now. Beijing appears to be fucked too. Another Socialist failure where city planners and God have failed.

Completely fucked. Sidewalks either non-existent or full with noodle soup carts and cars. During rush hour, sidewalks are considered additional roads....
