Fake Soldier Disarmed, Arrested
A 62-year-old man was arrested yesterday after impersonating a military officer and brandishing a weapon at a restaurant in Phnom Penh’s Prek Phnov district, military police reported yesterday.
Major Phuong Ly, deputy commander of the Prek Phnov district military police, said Ream Choeun was detained by police at the Boeng Sobin Restaurant in Prek Phnov commune at 9:30pm Tuesday after an argument broke out.
During his arrest, military police confiscated a pistol, a number of bullets and a fake military uniform.
“He was jobless. But he disguised himself as a colonel in the military and always wore military uniforms,” Major Ly told Khmer Times.
“He was arrested by our military police forces after he got into an argument with a group of people at the Boeng Sobin Restaurant and pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it while threatening to kill them.”
Police knew he was not a member of the military when they asked him for his ID card or any other related military documents and he could not produce any.
Mr. Choeun was charged with “use of a weapon without authorization” and is being held at the district military police station. He will appear in Phnom Penh Municipal Court for questioning Friday morning...
