Good news. The Cambodia side of the tracks is expected to be completed by next year to allow cross-border traffic. This should boost trade and tourism between Thailand and Cambodia.

Unfinished Railway Connected to Thailand

Cambodia’s northern railway line has been linked to Thailand at the border in Poipet City, officials said at a ceremony on Monday—although sections of track in Cambodia still need to be finished before trains can start running between the two countries.

At a ceremony marking a milestone in a project that has been underway since 2008, officials including Transport Minister Sun Chanthol said cross-border rail travel, accommodating both cargo and commuters, should be available next year...

Ly Borin, director of the Transport Ministry’s railway department, said that about 6 km of track remained unfinished inside Cambodia.

Officials broke ground on the 48 km stretch of track between Poipet and Serei Saophoan City in February 2008, with the original completion date set for 2009.

Border logistics are just now being worked out between the two countries, Mr. Borin said, including customs and immigration procedures...

New Terminal Planned at Poipet Border Gate
A new customs and immigration terminal is planned at the Poipet International Border Gate in Banteay Meanchey province, on the Cambodian side of the common border with Thailand, to cater to an expected increase of foreign tourists when the railway linking both countries is completed by the end of the year, said Minister of Tourism Thong Khon on Wednesday.

According to Mr. Khon’s Facebook posting, the new terminal will be built early next year and the plans have already been approved by relevant ministries and government departments.

Travel by train between Thailand and Cambodia will start when the 6.5-kilometer cross-border railway is completed by the year’s end linking Poipet City in Banteay Meanchey province to neighboring Thailand’s Sa Kaeo province. The 6.5-kilometer railway line is funded by the Asian Development Bank.

it'll be useless to me if it just dumps you in Poipet as now happens with the busses. And THEN the feudal lord there has minions squeezing money from anyone who wants to try to help tourists get OUT of this shithole that rhymes with toilet. And ONE early morning bus to get you out? All but useless. Hopefully the train will get as far as Pursat soon.

Thailand-Cambodia rail link delayed again

The train service between Thailand and Cambodia, which was expected to begin operations early this year, may be delayed due to compensation issues with people living along a one-kilometre stretch of track in Poipet town.

The rail line was scheduled to be connected by the end of 2016 and officials repeatedly said the official launching ceremony would be early this year.
However, the ceremony’s date has still not been revealed because the track has not been completely laid due to issues compensating the people living along it, said Cambodian Transport Ministry spokesman Va Simsorya. “Laying of the track is not finished,” the Khmer Times quoted him as saying. “There are still issues with the resettlement of villagers.
Only one kilometre of track remains unfinished because compensation issues with people living along the rail line in Poipet have not been solved,” Simsorya said.

“Because of this, we cannot yet set a specific date for the official ceremony,” he added. “If the project is technically not finished, we cannot say anything for the moment.”

The track between Cambodia and Thailand is already connected from Poipet to Aranyaprathet district in Sa Kaeo, according to the spokesman...

So how will trains to BKK work? Swap to a Thai train at the border? If Cambodian trains run all the way they're going to need sleeper cars. Even the trip to SHV is uncomfortable in those little seats after a couple of hours.

i dont see why a rail link between bangkok and poi pet will increase tourism,
it will be slower than a current bus and the ones that can afford it, fly over direct to SR or PP

I'd much rather catch a train than a bus. Get up and stretch your legs, possible onboard food, possibility of a smoke for smokers, decent chance of a sleep on longer trips, and generally safer than the roads.
