Man found guilty of girlfriend's murder lacked proof of innocence.

The long-delayed trial of 30-year-old Hong Kalydin finished yesterday at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, with the former police recruit found guilty of murdering his girlfriend in 2014.

The body of 20-year-old Song Davin, a first-year student at the Vanda Institute of Accounting, was discovered floating face-down in the Tonle Sap River in 2014 and Mr. Kalydin was arrested a week later.

Noting that the defendant had denied murdering his girlfriend and dumping her body in the river, presiding judge Veng Huoth said this had not been proven in court.

“Based on the hearings, although the accused has stated that he did not kill the victim, he did not have any proof to show the court,” Mr. Huoth told the courtroom.

“The court has found that he is guilty. Therefore the court has decided to sentence him to life in prison and orders him to pay a total of 20 million riel [about $5,000] in compensation to victim’s family,” he said...
