Two Bantengs Died Trapping in Snares
Pailin: according to Koh Santepheap Daily News, While patrolling in the protected forest, team met two batengs trapping in the snare (mother and kid). The big one is weight about 1000 kg. However, the two bantengs died as the team couldn't help them due to lack of skill and equipment. The two dead batengs were burned down at the scene.
The two bantengs were found around 4:32 on 04 July 2016 at the protected forest in Pailin.
According to the source, the banteng didn't die yet when the team arrived the scene but because the team didn't have enough equipment, so the banteng died when it became weaker and weaker.
Mr. Chan Socheat, the staff of MJP said that in that area, there are so many snares and his team is working hard to clear them out and looking for poachers who put them to face the law.
Note, there are only about 10 bantengs left in that area. It is an engendered animal.

Re: Two Bantengs Died Trapping in Snares in Protected Forest
Seeing these pictures had me google a Gaur, the other Cambodian wild cattle as I always suspected it was either of the two that I almost hit on a dirt bike beyond ko neak in the early 00's.
There were plenty small wild fires cutting the trail on that day and it must not have been only me sensing the danger since I suddenly smelled a powerful musk sent just before having to brake hard for a huge beast crossing the narrow trail from bushes a few meters only in front of me.
The power and muscles on display were so great that I thought would I had hit it, the bike would have been destroyed without stoping its course or worse pissing it off.
Here is what I saw:
I read somewhere there might be less than a dozen left if any at all.

A captive breeding programme is needed and there are easily enough animal-lovers with a few dollars to fund it

The Khmer Times reports them as being Gaurs. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but they might be correct as the Gaur seems to have a more prominent hump. .

Judging by the horns in the OP, they look more like Gaurs. Compare the horns below.John Bingham wrote:The Khmer Times reports them as being Gaurs. It's hard to tell from the pictures, but they might be correct as the Gaur seems to have a more prominent hump. .

Endangered wild gaur found dead in protected forest
13 Feburary 2017
A group of forest rangers found the remains of an endangered gaur – the tallest species of wild cattle on the planet – and found themselves in the middle of a firefight while observing a forest in Siem Reap province’s Svay Leu district yesterday.
The rangers believe the animal was killed by local poachers. Deputy Provincial Governor Kim Chhayheang told Khmer Times that at 10pm, a group of park rangers overseeing the Kulen Promtep Wildlife Sanctuary heard gunfire coming from the forest.
“They heard four shots from the forest, and they assumed that they were poachers hunting wildlife,” he said.
“Park rangers, along with soldiers, found many pieces of gaur meat alongside the animal’s severed head in the forest at around 3am on Sunday after spending about six hours trying to reach the target where the poachers shot dead a gaur.”
The poachers, he added, fled the scene before the forest rangers arrived...
