I have a external hard drive which my computer now says does not exist so cannot connect to. Is it possible to repair these without loosing all the data photos etc. Should I be storing all my photos on cloud instead ? If I was to die who owns all those family photos that are floating around out there, as I really would like them to be available to
the family in 20 to 30 years time ?

If the computer is not recognizing the external Hard Drive it could simply be a problem with the ports on your computer, if possible plug it into a friends computer and see if it is recognized. I would be careful which shop you take it to in case they lose the files which happened to me. Luckily a friend put me onto a free download called Recuver (Google it and it's free) which re installed all the lost data back onto my external Hard Drive.

Already tried another computer. Have decided I may have to take it with me on my next trip to OZ and have it done there, data put on a new ext h/drive. More expensive but at least I know it will be done properly.

LX Pup Linux. Burn .iso to disk or use netbootin I think it is, to go direct to USB. IF LINUX don't see the drive something very strange is up. Like failed drive I spose. IF you get it back put those cherished photos ON DISK for backup.

did you change/upgrade your OS or anything before this occurred? or just suddenly the external was not seen? I'd get that external plugged into some friends Linux puter at least. But I think everyone should try LX Pup on a USB. Very helpful
