Or does the new google maps (browser version) just really really really really suck? Super slow to load, and not really an intuitive user experience.

Sacrilegious - I thank the gods of Google for Google maps, every day since we've been in Cambodge. Give or take a hundred meters it's allowed us to direct even the most determined (to get lost, charge more) tuktuk driver to our intended destination. Our regular drivers have given up that game and now just placidly look for directions if they're unsure.

Since their last update it's been virtually unusable for me. It takes so long to load the street names/numbers up that by the time I do my tuk tuk driver has already asked five people and found out where we are going.

You seem to be talking about the Mobile app (?). I don't have any problem with it and Google has made it a lot easier to save maps offline which helps immensely. New satellite images of outlying areas and lots of new commune labels as well. Looks much better to me.

Actually, that's true for me too recently - the 'you are here' marker is often a turn behind actual position, resulting in a lot of u-turns and muttering tuktuk drivers.

Yeah, down at 492 today and Google maps was just throwing darts at a board for a few minutes - the few minutes it took to miss the corner.

I just wish they'd bring back the "distance" tool.
You could just tap from place to place and it would show you the distance.
Great on trips

Siri on iAnything: the distance to the nearest latte is 5.2km, Dave. Would you like me to post a hipster whinge about it?
Google maps on Android: the distance to Garage bar is 5 beers.

It's definitely not perfect, but it's greatly improved!
