I am planning an IT upgrade ahead of my next trip out to Asia.

What do you chaps favour to take into account portability, viewability, download and upload, security etc, when it comes to choosing a new laptop or tablet or projector or what ever else.

Suitable for the ex-pat life ?

Portability, 10.1 inch laptop. You don't need a very expensive one, Acer/Dell are fine.
500GB hard drive, way better than an iPad
Get a dongle, or if you stay in one place a lot, get internet for $12/month unlimited downloads
Smartphones are very subjective. Speak to NED/jm/cambod, tell them what you need, and they will advise you well.
Stand on those Google glasses.

Without knowing what your needs are or budget its really impossible to recommend anything.

I mean unless you need the grunt of an x86 processor then a (android or iOS) tablet will be a far better option then a laptop especially if it's just for web browsing, viewing media, voip and light tasks.

Tablets have cheaper apps, better battery life and better bang for your buck then laptops.

Also, if you have a smartphone there is no need to waste cash on a dongle when you can just tether or setup WiFi from your phone.

These days I rarely sit at a computer. I can do most things on my phone/tablet. If I really need to use my PC I can remote access from my devices anyway.

I just want something for general ex-pat use:

Stream films and the rugby
Access forums and email
video calls
and maybe a little business management

anyone has dealings with the G-Box Midnight MX2 are they any good out there or is there a better option. I was thinking not the actual box, just download direct through the laptop , or what ever it ends up being
