For those who are interested in exploring the North-East, Travel North-East Cambodia has some good up-to-date info. We don't talk about this area much, so I'll try to find some pics and info on some of the places of interest. Here is a map of the sealed roads:

This is not news, but for people who don't know: The road continues up from Stung Treng to Laos- 4000 Islands, and from Banlung you can cross the border into Vietnam. You can also drive to over to Siem Reap directly from the N-E via the bridge at Stung Treng.

It's the fashion at Yaklom volcanic lake near Banlung to dress in hill-tribe costumes and get your photo taken by the lake :

Have a good trip and post us some photos :thumb:
Also be good to hear if there is any hassle taking your car through to Laos. They can be a bit greedy at the border.

Photos of ferry docking at Stung Treng ferry crossing from 2013/14/ :

Nice shady place overlooking the river to watch the antics and drink beer. (I heard the riverside has been cleaned up a bit since then. Seems to be improving at each visit. Stung Treng riverside and market used to be a shit-hole - filthy dirty and rubbish everywhere.)

friend has some land above the waterfall 70 kms outside Steung Treng ( also building a new casino right next to the falls and a resort for rich Laotians
this morning we took a small boat across to Laos for a few hours, seems a paper allowing you to go for up to 5 days can be had for 10,000 Riel.
BTW most people spoke Laotian and the kip is used as much as the riel. i had an easier time communicating in thai than my gf speaking Khmer LOL

There are car ferries going from one Laos island to another where we docked.

There building a new covered market now in ST next to the old outdoor one, u can get great deals on hotels as well
Riverside is nice in the evening

That is just the jetty for boats unloading, either from another city, or from the other side of river there is a separate village called Stung Treng, its bit confusing if you are coming from the north, if you follow the first sign it takes you to north side of river into that stung treng village, and not the main city on the south side of river, which now has nice new 'sekong bridge'
the passenger ferry stopped im not sure when.
