Pond Hunting

Post by The Add Jay »

Hey guys. Last week I drove about 200km to Krong Suong to a rubber plantation where I met my girlfriends older brother who runs the place. He took me to go see bombing sites thanks to the U.S Air Force. You can't see these on google maps do to the tree canopy's. There is also apparently to the locals, some left over ordinance but they forgot where on the plantation they are located.

So I know on that Kampot travel site they do the same thing called pond hunting but I can't figure out how to work the google earth map. so I been sticking with regular google map. Its very difficult to pin point sites since alot of it looks like water for animals to bathe and wallow in. Not to mention the difficulty in in finding the sites within 1km from your maps cause of the no points of interest.

Did anybody ever try doing this before? Anybody know some sites near P.P? and does anybody want to go with me and find the ponds?

Thanks

Never tried.

Let's go to Odung. I think it's less than an hour.

That's about as far as I feel like pushing my bike when it breaks down.

Sounds pretty interesting. I'd heard of big holes in Prey Veng and especially Svay Rieng, but never thought of checking it out. I'd imagine there isn't much interesting left and as you say, lot's of places would be overgrown by now, or have been converted into squarish irrigation ponds by the locals. Would still be cool to see some actual holes though. I'm guessing some of the older locals who grew up there would be able to point you towards some actual bombing sites. Otherwise I fear it might be pretty random/difficult to find unless you know where to look.

I dont think there is anything at Undong but if you follow road 51 north you can see many ponds.

This is what Im looking for http://kampotsurvivalguide.blogspot.com ... chive.html

If you go to the checkpoint near kep you can see a carpet bombing site but its far into the sticks which Im sure has some landminds.

My old engineer tells me he knows of many huge craters in ken svay province, I saw one the other day near kep.
I remember the first time I flew into siem riep I saw a lot of craters, it depends on the water levels in the wet season I think whether they are obvious or not.
