Cambodian Angkor drops direct BKK-PNH flights

Guess I won't be flying this airline anymore if they want 17,000 baht to fly out of BKK to Phnom Penh -- through Siem Reap! Must have lost their minds.

Last year you could fly direct to PP on CAA for 5400 baht return. Earlier this year I checked ahead and it showed direct flights being scheduled for October. They have been removed now and you can still only fly through SR in October and November.

Good old Air Asia is showing 3700 baht plus small fees. But, as usual, arriving and departing in rush hour in both cities. Bangkok Air is showing 7400 baht return -- all for the same mid-October dates.

And shock of shocks, THAI shows a reasonable (for THAI) 7965 baht.

Cambodia Angkor Air, 49% (actually 100%) owned by Vietnam Airlines. Why do you think Cambodia Air (49% owned by Philippine Air) couldn't get off the ground? The powers that be are owned by Vietnam and the paperwork for Cambodia to fly has been lost. Can't have an actual airlines that wants to grow air travel in Cambodia when all those people could be spending their money in Vietnam. Philippine Air has airplanes setting in PP ready to fly in Cambodia. Can't be flying to Sihanoukville and the beach/casinos there when the Vietnamese have to pay off the new airport on Phu Quoc. Vietnam Air just started direct flights Singapore to Phu Quoc Island. Direct flights Singapore to Snooky would kill that as its cheaper here and there are tons of casinos to gamble in.

Good post SM. I saw this new development last week. I didn't mind paying a little extra to fly into BKK, though the experience on K6 was like night & day. Great on the Airbus and fucking awful on the prop-job. The FD arrival time is less than optimal. Often I can't get a taxi to go anywhere near Sukhumvit then & sometimes it's a quick & easy ride. If you want to save $$, take the A1 shuttle (30B) to Mo Chit BTS. ps: it's outside Gate 6 & runs every 20 mins or so.

I spend the little extra money and fly Bangkok Air PP-BKK. I set in their airport lounge in PP and drink their drinks/eat their food, get a complete meal on the way to BKK and land at a real airport that has the skytrain to downtown or Bell travel to Patts.

You're right, but I guess if I had your money - I'd throw mine away. PG is 2-3X the price of FD if you book ahead. I go to BKK every couple months & my average price on FD has been around 4000B (rt) all in. That's why I liked K6 - it' was more, but < $200 (rt) usually, (not $3-400) & you got to fly into BKK.

I don't look at it as throwing money away and I'm on a fixed income (retired). You only live once and you can't take it with you. Why be treated like cattle to save a few bucks? Also Cambodia Angkor Air has a limited number of airplanes and I sat down with the schedule and figured out that they left no time for maintenance on their airplanes. Cambo mindset, run it until the wheels fall off.

Airasia may be nice for young backpackers, but as a member of the old farts club, I like a little comfort and room, plus they go into the old airport with no skytrain or Bell Travel to get you to Patts for 200bt.

A travel agent told me that K6 flights from PNH-BKK will start up again in high season.

Well that's good news! I have flown with CAA several times and had nothing but positive experiences with them. Hope they can manage to stick around.
