Trainspotting

Do you have a Cambodian trip report you want to share? Post it here, and feel free to link to your blog if it's a travel blog for Cambodia, South East Asia, or anywhere really. You can ask and answer questions about travel advice in Cambodia or just share your pictures and videos with us. Most people who live in or visit Cambodia have also checked out nearby countries like Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, and you can get to most of these countries by traveling overland, so put any travel plans, reviews or questions here. Discussions about dirt bike trails in here as well.

5.5 hours to cover 225km is slow as all hell

And that is their advertised time. The average journey is much longer.

Kampot to phnom penh can take 8 hours on a bad day. 160km...

They can't run an efficient passenger service on single gauge rail lines, especially when 90% of their revenue comes from freight

When it comes to transportation in Cambodia, I like slow.

PP to Kampot shouldn't be much more than 5 hours surely?

It can be when there's three freight trains being let through or when there is a broken unit blocking the tracks

That is the reported time from a passenger who traveled yesterday- from the link I gave.
It usually takes me around that from home in PP by taxi.

Royal group pretty much operates the passenger service as a condition of having the freight business.
It is a PR exercise to them.
They do not currently seem to see any potential in the passenger business at all.

I think it is the safest way to travel, slow journey through the countryside, and the added bonus of a comfortable seat and air-conditioning.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
