Royal Railway resumes passenger services

The Royal Railway reopened passenger service on Tuesday between Phnom Penh and six provinces – Takeo, Pursat, Battambang, Kampot, Kep, Preah and Sihanouk.

Sak Vanny, manager of Royal Train Square, said that the reopening of rail services is to meet the travel needs of the people as the nation celebrates Khmer New Year.

She said resumption of services was announced on social media and there is good response from travellers.

Vanny said trains will depart at 6.40 am from Phnom Penh to Takeo, Pursat and Battambang and at 7 am to Kampot, Kep and Sihanoukville.

She added rail services will be increased after studying the demand for seats.

The Royal Railway said these are test runs and currently open for passengers only and cargo such as cars and motorcycles are not allowed. Rail operations in the country were suspended after the Covid-19 outbreak.

Fares from Phnom Penh were listed as – Takeo, 24,000 Riel or 6 USD, Pursat 28,000 Riel or 7 USD, Battambang 32,000 Riel or 8 USD, Kampot and Kep have the same price at 36,000 riel or $ 9 and to Sihanoukville 40,000 riel or $ 10 per person.

Cambodia to study upgrade of existing railway to a high-speed railway from Poipet-Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville

Prime Minister HE, Head of the Royal Government has instructed the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to study the feasibility of improving the existing railway system in Cambodia into a high-speed railway.
This is according to Sun Chanthol, Minister of Public Works and Transport, while leading a youth delegation of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to visit Sihanoukville Autonomous Port on April 27, 2022.

“We are studying to transform our railway into a high-speed railway from Poipet to Phnom Penh, from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville and to the port,” he said.

The Cambodian government has been pushing for upgrading the existing railway system to a high-speed railway, building new railway lines domestically, and connecting the tracks to neighbouring countries.

As others have said, just a normal train speed would be fine for now. The tracks here always seemed ridiculously narrow to me, they are 1 meter gauge. Where I'm from 1.6 meters is standard. Obviously the flatness of the interior and level crossings are an issue.

I read at the moment they are only taking passengers and no cars or motorcycles; I will certainly be taking some journeys when they reinstate the later.
