I only started riding bikes when coming to Vietnam. As that was 21 years ago, with little traffic at the the time, it wasn't too bad. I wouldn't do it today. I had three accidents in all those years which I consider to be good going.

I had my learner's license back home so knew how to ride a bike, but only started riding seriously here. Also started off-road riding here.

I always drove cars back in The States. I had no desire to drive when I lived in The Big Smoke. After I moved to rural Cambodia I had to learn how to drive a Moto. So in the last 15,years I've had 2 minor accidents, neither of which was my fault. I drive illegally and the cops leave me alone since I drive an Old piece of shit Honda Cub more than 20 years old. The motor just had its fourth rebuild. I think the cops leave me alone because they are ashamed to be seen near it. And there would be no resale value in confiscating it. Hey, it gets me from point A to point B and doesn't eat gas. At my age a real Moto would probably get me killed.

cub is a classic work horse.
the daelim is also not to be sneered at for practicality.
i had a full engine rebuild for $45 with genuine parts.

My first bike was a Honda Cub 50 cc. Bought it for USD 1,000 in 5,000 VND notes, sold it for USD 1,000 two years later. That bike got me everywhere and if it really got too rough, I carried it (the hinterland of Binh Thuan Province was pretty much not yet developed at the time.
