Golden Crown Buffet Restaurant, Sinhanoukville

Post by Sailorman »

A new "buffet" restaurant opened in Snookyviile half way between the Lucky Ocean Supermarket and the Golden Lyons Circle. It lists itself as a buffet, but thats stretching the word. Its big with booths and a conveyor by the booths with plates of food. For $12.us you get all the food you can eat and beer/coke/orange juice you can drink. When I went there I had hoped for a Chinese version of "Old County Buffet." (Fellow Americans will know what I'm talking about.) The actual "buffet" was a real disappointment.

I walked in an hour after opening time (its was 5pm.) There was no food anywhere and only one booth had people. They had to find someone who spoke some English. I asked "were is the food?" The said "we will make it for you." They set me in a booth and brought a big pan of boiling watery broths of some sort. I asked for a beer (no self serve.) I got a plastic glass with an inch of beer and the rest was foam. I refuse that and they brought me a pitcher with the same ratio of beer to foam. I was eventually brought a small plate of cold deep fried shrimp and cold deep fried chicken. The conveyor finally started and plates of fake-crab rolls, little squid, vegies, and some thin sliced meat went by. You take plates off the belt and add them to the boiling watery broth. Not vary tasty. The flies seemed to like the ride on the conveyor food. There seemed to be a lot of flies for an aircon place.

I went to get some orange juice from a machine, but it was hot and there was no ice. I got a weak/foamy coke with no ice, but at least it was semi-cold.

Almost no one speaks English so its not aimed at tourists. Its too pricy for the locals (cheap street restaurants just across the street) and the Chinese want real food and/or spend their money at a casino where they get free or discounted food. At $12us a pop I don't see this place making it for very long. Take away the beer and bring the price down to $5 or $6 and they may attract a following. I'll give this place a pass. BTW/ After leaving I could tell I had just gotten big doses of MSG.

I'm not a fan of those "hot pot" style places where you boil you own food, either. They are ubiquitous in Thailand, but at least there you can go get your raw ingrredients yourself, buffet style. This one you talk about sounds shit.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

didnt mean to offend khmer posters again but khmer people dont know the first thing about doing business, all they care about is profit margin, ignoring all other else, but then so does vietnamese and chinese, oh well.... that goes the whole region.

all they care about is profit
O really?
Why are they so crap at it then?
Business success here is proportional to the Chen ratio of the bisnisman.
Inversely proportional to social consciousness and merit rewards.

Is this not so?
i mean, you do not see any motherfucking IHOP or Taco Bell springing up here do you?

Despite the Khmers being the doughnut kings of California, they just don't make the nut here with a few exceptions like Mike's burgers, a substandard in and out whattaburger knockoff.

This place is a business desert, though getting better.

The North Korea panorama is emblematic of what i am trying to get at in an incoherent way.

I mean, i like it here but jeez, i eat at home now.
cow penis with big red ants and bee juice.
well fuck that.

what i mean was that they tend to sacrifice product intergrity by cutting corners thus making a bad product and no returning customers, also they do not know the value of branding yet. another 10 years maybe.

any review you read on forums or anywhere on the internet will be skewed in any direction by cynics or scammers, have to take it with lots of salt. :beer3:

p.s. there are lots of honest reviews as well

THE DAY AFTER:

Well, its the day after eating at the Golden Crown "buffet" restaurant. I haven't been able to get more than ten feet from the loo and my stomach is doing back-flips. Looks like this restaurant gave me the gift that keeps on giving. Headed to the drug store to get some stopper pills. It could have been the squid (with flies) that was riding the belt round and round, or the foam in the beer was dish washing soap, or the food may have been setting out a long time before being put on the belt.

BTW/ In my youth I went to school to run restaurants and kitchens in restaurants and did so for almost twenty years. I don't scam or skew, but tell it as I see it. "You can't polish a turd" and this place can't be polished.

tbh they lost me at $12, if im spending $12 on a meal, ill go to monkey marks and have a huge cut of juicy steak (who needs all you can eat when the original plate is a belly full)

me and my friends go eat at a nice khmer restaurant where we will order 4 or 5 main courses and a couple of jugs of beer and it will only come to $12 total bill,
the beer garden round the corner from my place most main courses are around $1.50-3.00 and a jug of beer costs only $1.75,
great service staff and they also have lady guests on offer if you require to sit and socialise
