Golden Crown Buffet Restaurant, Sinhanoukville

A new "buffet" restaurant opened in Snookyviile half way between the Lucky Ocean Supermarket and the Golden Lyons Circle. It lists itself as a buffet, but thats stretching the word. Its big with booths and a conveyor by the booths with plates of food. For $12.us you get all the food you can eat and beer/coke/orange juice you can drink. When I went there I had hoped for a Chinese version of "Old County Buffet." (Fellow Americans will know what I'm talking about.) The actual "buffet" was a real disappointment.
I walked in an hour after opening time (its was 5pm.) There was no food anywhere and only one booth had people. They had to find someone who spoke some English. I asked "were is the food?" The said "we will make it for you." They set me in a booth and brought a big pan of boiling watery broths of some sort. I asked for a beer (no self serve.) I got a plastic glass with an inch of beer and the rest was foam. I refuse that and they brought me a pitcher with the same ratio of beer to foam. I was eventually brought a small plate of cold deep fried shrimp and cold deep fried chicken. The conveyor finally started and plates of fake-crab rolls, little squid, vegies, and some thin sliced meat went by. You take plates off the belt and add them to the boiling watery broth. Not vary tasty. The flies seemed to like the ride on the conveyor food. There seemed to be a lot of flies for an aircon place.
I went to get some orange juice from a machine, but it was hot and there was no ice. I got a weak/foamy coke with no ice, but at least it was semi-cold.
Almost no one speaks English so its not aimed at tourists. Its too pricy for the locals (cheap street restaurants just across the street) and the Chinese want real food and/or spend their money at a casino where they get free or discounted food. At $12us a pop I don't see this place making it for very long. Take away the beer and bring the price down to $5 or $6 and they may attract a following. I'll give this place a pass. BTW/ After leaving I could tell I had just gotten big doses of MSG.
