Enjoy the internet while it lasts
Sources have confirmed rumours that the MICT is at least in the vendor consultation phase of a total lock-down of the domestic internet. Under the plan, every Thai citizen will need to authenticate an internet log-on session with a smart ID card.

Earlier reports said that every citizen will have at most 6 IP addresses allocated at any one time. Asked how foreigners can access the internet, the permanent secretary answered, “I have not thought of that yet,” one vendor said.

Site is currently down,,,http://www.telecomasia.net/blog/content ... 74.twitter

but u can read it in the google cache; http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/s ... en&strip=1
The MICT is also pursuing the Chinese playbook and is working on what is often referred to as a Thai Facebook that would allow for easier identification of perpetrators who dare to not be happy, though plans for that seem less well developed as of now.

Telenor has confirmed that the total Facebook outage days after the coup was because Dtac has received orders from the regulator, the NBTC, to shut down Facebook access, putting end to speculation on what caused the outage.
This, more than the visa situation, will force expats out of Thailand

I don't see why a lack of internet would drive expats out of Thailand. It's the one place you don't need internet porn!

They will access it the same way they do now.

To get an internet account in Thailand legally as a non-citizen, you have to give your Passport # Up. Tourist places are quite lax about this, then again some hotels do record it down when they hand you your WIFI username and password.

To think that foreigners are not going to be able to access the internet would be shooting themselves in the foot. Thais aren't stupid.

did u all read the article?

This seeks to put roadblocks to getting a connection.

I know at least 50 people that use the internet for work out of their homes or offices. Take away that an they cant work;

There is a group of about 25 that do affiliate marketing and live in Bangkok that could not work if this actually was put in force, not to mention the many that do stock market trading.

Surely they could "buy" an IP address from a Thai, given that they will have several available...

While it definitely sounds like a pain in the ass if they flop through with it, I have faith that the current expats will find a way around it.

"I have not thought that yet" does not equal "holy shit, no internet for foreigners!!!"

Technically, there are already roadblocks for foreigners.

Which is something that Thais are notoriously well known for doing. It's generally a result of what's known as "No Concept of the Future". Thais don't have a monopoly on it, but they have certainly mastered the art of utilizing it to thoroughly baffle the general public.

At least in this case, with the "I have not thought of that yet" statement, we can give a couple of brownie points for honesty.
Thais aren't stupid.
Yes, you're absolutely right. It would be much more accurate to say, "Most Thais aren't very clever". :ugeek:
