American and a Canadian die at Phuket music festival

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Two foreign visitors died after attending a world-renowned electric dance music festival in this southern island province on Saturday night.

Both foreigners, an American and a Canadian, passed out at the Electric Daisy Carnival Thailand 2025 music festival in tambon Choeng Thale of Thalang district Saturday night.

According to police, Canadian Sharfaraz Maqbul Ahmed, 28, was brought to Thalang Hospital at 8.50pm on Saturday. On arrival there, he was unconscious but still had a pulse.

Hospital staff then tried to resuscitate him but to no avail. He was pronounced dead at 9.26pm on Saturday.

American Minh Nguyen Quang Phan, 32, was taken from the music festival venue to Thalang Hospital at 11.35pm on Saturday. Resuscitation attempts failed and he was pronounced dead at 12.30am on Sunday.

Police and staff of Thalang Hospital could not immediately identify the cause of the deaths. The bodies had yet to be examined at Vachiraphuket Hospital.

....According to police interviews, friends of the Canadian victim reported he had consumed a significant amount of cannabis prior to the incident. However, Col. Weerapong suggested that factors such as long-distance travel fatigue, hot weather conditions, and alcohol consumption might have contributed to the incidents. He emphasized that strict security measures, including 20 walk-through scanners and thorough searches by both male and female officers, were in place to prevent drug possession at the venue....

more methanol? but there is a lot of options at such festivals, especially in a hot climate.

pma / dxm sold as mdma can be deadly due to elevated body temperatures.

then all the fentanyl laced stuff.

Just looking at the list of news items on the ASEAN Now Phuket section there are several foreign deaths in different circumstances in the last week or two, intermingled with the regular foreigners behaving badly stories. Easy to get immune to it I guess if you live there, or perhaps that's just regarded as normal down there, especially in high season.

There are tourists dying left right and center in Thailand. It's always been a nest of snakes.

Despite the agenda promoted by that Aussie lawyer Yarwood, I wouldn't be surprised if Khao Tao's death numbers compare favourably to Phuket and Pattaya per 1,000 visitors. It's a jungle out there. 😁

According to the last information from the Dept of Tourism I could find

A tourist to Thailand faces the following odds

one chance in 301,204 of dying

one chance in 735,294 of dying in a vehicle crash

one chance in 2,8 million of dying while swimming or boating,

One tourist in every 6,250,000 committed suicide

Thailand welcomed 35,000,000+ tourists in 2024.

Amongst expats in Thailand I am sure the odds in commiting suicide are much, much lower.

I know that's a bit out of date but that doesn't sound far off with what gets reported these days, effectively about 1 death every 3 days.
