Parliament in favour of legalising gambling to boost economy

Although this has been talked about since i have lived here, it has never gotten this far along>

Think of the fall out if it does pass>>> last year 1.8 million thais travelled to Cambodia, i'd be willing to wager 1.6 million of them went to gamble
this would be a huge crush to Cambodia's economy, as why would they cross the border to gamble in Cambodia?

i do love the way the thai government comes up with ways to make $$$
Medical tourism, decimalized weed, now gambling ( chinese tourism is down this year, so what do Chinese love to do beside shopping & eating.....?)

The House of Representatives voted in favour of legalising gambling while boosting the nation’s economy. The special commission championing the creation of integrated entertainment complexes unveiled its plan, urging the government to join hands with the private sector.

The commission stressed that public involvement is key, advocating for the legalisation of specific gambling forms like Thai boxing to drive this initiative forward.

The commission’s exhaustive study revealed promising prospects: these complexes could smash unemployment rates and deal a knockout blow to illegal gambling. But beware, it cautioned, as such ventures could also unleash a plethora of addiction and crime, potentially ruffling the feathers of religious sensibilities.

.....The study proposed that the inaugural entertainment complex should be launched near the Eastern Economic Corridor. If successful, similar complexes would be introduced in other regions.

Oh dear. That will halve Cambodia's "tourist" entries at one swoop.

Not sure it would have such a huge effect on Cambodia's economy, however. I suspect most of those Thai gamblers are spending in Thai-owned casinos in Poipet, and not staying even one night. Not much cash reaches the wider economy.

Not sure it would have such a huge effect on Cambodia's economy, however. I suspect most of those Thai gamblers are spending in Thai-owned casinos in Poipet, and not staying even one night. Not much cash reaches the wider economy.
