Trending worldwide is the hashtag #เยาวชนปลดแอก with 3.5 million tweets already. This is referring to the youth movement in #Thailand that is calling for democracy and the resignation of the prime minister. Another hashtag is #respectdemocracyTHAI which has has 1.2 million tweets

Respect democracy? Was Thailand ever a democracy?

I lived in Bangkok during the protests against General Suchinda in 1992. Bangkok was an eerie place at that time with no traffic and everything closed. Suchinda brought down combat troops from the Lao border to confront the protesters and they opened fire with live ammunition killing over 50 people. Much of the action was televised and this caused further outrage. The following morning the King resolved the problem on live television with the protagonists: Suchinda resigned and the protesters went home. The King was deeply loved and respected by all the population so was able to use his status to resolve the problem. The current situation could have the same potential for violence by the authorities if the protesters remain over several days. Unfortunately this situation will not be resolved in the same way so the outcome is very much in doubt.

Excellent news, I hope the cozy times for this inept and kleptomaniac government are over. I'm not sure if I will live to see a truly democratic Thailand, but I sure hope so. The elites have lost their Crowd Appeaser in Chief, that could make quite a difference when things heat up next time.

Protesters told reporters if the government doesn’t respond to the demands within 2 weeks, they will intensify the movement.
Chuthatip Sirikhan, president of the Union of Students of Thailand, asked the protesters to turn the torch lights of their smart phones on and aim them at the monument, as a symbolic gesture showing that “Thai democracy is now in darkness.” She said protesters would maintain the vigil at the monument “to prevent democracy from vanishing from the country.”

Police arrived at the scene and, using a bullhorn, warned protesters that they might face a 2-year prison term and/or a fine of 40,000 baht for not observing social distancing. The warning was ignored.
