“Successful” Thailand hangs its fate on vaccine quest

a good,"what if" read
The daily numbers of COVID-19 cases in the country have been encouraging, but the good news remains quite limited, and the biggest nightmare can still come true. What if no vaccine is available in the next two years? What if there will be no vaccine at all?

The worst-case scenario features all vaccination candidates failing before or at the last hurdles, but it was often dismissed earlier this year. However, health officials, economists and governments have started to take it seriously. It happened before with HIV/AIDS an outstanding example. Admittedly, HIV/AIDS was not as widespread as COVID-19 _ and the world easily learned to live with it _ but it was not as economically and socially devastating either.

Adapting to COVID-19 is a lot easier said than done. A “no vaccine” scenario showcases occasional or frequent outbreaks and national shutdowns, upended social and religious life, revamped diplomacy and serious political reforms. Imports and exports as well as trade barriers that go with them will have to be seriously and continuously rethought and rearranged. The tourism industry will have to undergo regular and drastic changes.

Response to HIV didn’t bring the Second Great Depression and subsequent wars. I would like to be wrong but my expectations are quite pessimistic. All that response because of... another flu. Interplanetary scale of insanity. You can’t subvert economic laws without consequences, we are now facing a domino effect of all industries collapsing. Wars come next, historically.
“This time is different” - famous last words.

:stir: the lockdown has nothing to do with the public health. This is easily seen when big Corp is allowed to stay open while small shops must close. In the US Costco and Walmart Loews and home depot are allowed to be crowded with people but small shops must close. In Thailand 7/11 stays open but the little guy has to close. It's about increasing the control over the sheeple by using fear to manipulate them and we can all see how easy it is to do. This is why you never see the actual percentage in increase in the overall mortality rate talked about. Because it's statistically insignificant.

That's not true, it simply depends on the products a shop sells - necessities or not. There's a mom and pop shop that sells beverages in my neighborhood, it has been open throughout this mess just like the nearby 7/11s.

The Theresa May government offered to encourage people to actually contribute to their own care - but guess, what - the public refused it! (and labelled it the 'dementia tax').

Now those same people are bitching that the care industry is underfunded - can't have it both ways!
