so word of advice;

DONT OVERSTAY in Thailand.

Looks a lot worse than i ever imagined after seeing some pics before of bunk beds for the over stayers.
Fake news, ( never been one to trust anything the catholic church comes out about), some other holding cell .... or??
A regional news source, linked to the Catholic Church, has published a group of photos over the weekend slamming Thailand’s notorious Bangkok’s Immigration Detention Centre. The article claims the Centre has “squalid and overcrowded conditions in which inmates, including children, women and the elderly, have been forced to languish for months and even years on end.”
Bangkok’s IDC, ironically situated in Bangkok’s swishest district of Sathorn, was designed to hold no more than 500 detainees at most, but even officials admit that it frequently needs to accommodate up to 1,200 people at any one time. The article says, inmates are let out from their cramped cells to get some fresh air in an outdoor area, for a few hours a day.

looks like a good place to avoid, I take it back when I said Thailand was being dragged into the 20th century, make that the 19th century.

Harsh. Especially for a victimless crime.

Richard if you've seen pictures with bunk beds, they are from the airport holding cells, not from the IDC in the city. Not fake I'd say.

Now look at pictures of Nauru. thai learning from Australians or Australians learning from Aussies. or how about those nice wire fenced camps in USA? ora refugee camp in europe
I am still amazed after nearly a decade at foreigners criticising Asian conditions while ignoring what their own governments are doing

The photos are real and the people held are living in inhumane conditions. Shocking that a civilized nation would treat fellow human beings this way.

Oops, only the first two pictures are in Thailand, the last three are from immigration detention centers in Texas, USA.

If they were 4 legged animals in those cages,, without water and freedom to exercise, the world would be up in arms protesting.

I often ask myself do we lock people up as a punishment ,, a means of re-education , or to protect others in the free world from harm..

I notice in the fourth pic, LH side is a person holding a child ,,, What crime would that child have committed ?

The pictures of temporary US holding areas are totally off topic, misleading, proven false and lying TDS BS. But regardless, one of the reasons I left Thailand is because legit ordinary Joes like me were lumped in the the flotsam and jetsam that Thailand has been trying to rid itself of, many of which flotsam and jetsam are now here in Cambo.

I wont go into the reasons why I ended up overstaying (it was only a few days) but I spent about 3 months in there about a decade ago.

You spend the first month in a thai prison while waiting to go to court and get fined, then go to the idc to await deportation. No contact with family or friends either so my old dear thought I was dead for about 2 months.

120 people in my cell and over 200 in the same sized cell next door which was reserved for the Africans (read: blacks) that had no lights or washing facilities. I have never encountered such overt racism in my life. They were treated like shit.

My embassy got me, and my countrymen, out relatively quickly. In fact I was told my embassy got us out quicker than anyone. (The USA were surprisingly slow considering their power) There were guys in there from places like Belarus, Estonia, Uzbekistan, etc, that had been in there for a couple of years or more.

In the thai prison there was some proper 'hardmen' but I never witnessed any fighting or rape or anything of that nature - there were a few scuffles, that's all.

The food was terrible but the main problem was lack of personal space as you were literally on top of each other, the lack of decent washing facilities and the state of the toilets. Plus the lack of sleep, the lights were never turned off (unless you were black and they were never turned on) and the noise which was constant, and the total boredom. Also not really knowing when you were going to get out was quite stressful.

I have never been back to Thailand and probably never will go there again. It rates itself as a 'first world' country but it isn't at all and the conditions in the idc are a disgrace considering the majority in there have committed no crime apart from over stay. Plus Thailand's pathetic obsession with there monarchy. Its the costa del sol of se asia. Full of chippy Essex boys tucking into ladyboys/brass and loads of young bucks doing the wai cru (or whatever its called), saying they are muay thai fighters complete with thai toos. Plus backpackers. Thousands of em.

No thank you.

(edit: the last 3 photos above aren't in Thailand - that looks worse but you probably don't stay as long.)
