Thailand's Immigration chief (Big Joke) arrested

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Thailand's Immigration chief (Big Joke) arrested

Post by sigmoid »

The official story:
The immigration chief, who was seen as a rising star in the police force, was abruptly transferred to an inactive post according to an order released Saturday.

The document, issued by police commander Gen. Chakthip Chaijinda, said Lt. Gen. Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn was transferred on Friday to the Operation Center of the National Police Office. The order specified neither his new duties nor the reason for the transfer.

Apparently though, he was arrested Friday evening for 'abuse of power' and is being detained.

Scottish freelance journalist, Andrew MacGregor Marshall reports that one of Thailand’s most senior and well known policemen, Lt-General Surachate Hakparn was arrested in Bangkok on Friday night.

He was an ally of the Deputy Prime Minister but apparently is now out of favour with the palace.

In 2018 he shot to international infamy when he publicly attacked the credibility of a 19 yo London girl after she reported that she was drugged, raped and robbed on Koh Tao, Thailand. His arrest appears completely unrelated to those events.

Apparently it's rumored that he has been sent to the King's own private prison. Andrew did an article about it a couple years ago.

That's what happens when you become popular and "good" at your job. You make enemies inside the establishment as well as outside. He has obviously trod on someone's tea money donor.

Former Immigration Bureau chief Surachate Hakparn, and confidant of Deputy PM Prawit Wongsuwan, said nothing yesterday about his abrupt transfer to an inactive post at the RTP HQ in Bangkok.
In his first public appearance following the transfer order from the national police chief Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda back to ‘inactive duties”, Surachate reported to work at the Royal Thai Police headquarters just before lunchtime yesterday. He smiled for the media throng but had little to say.

But he answered a phone call from a journalist who wanted to know about the transfer.

“It’s inappropriate for me to talk about it. Let the boss provide the explanation. I don’t feel it’s right for me to talk,” Surachate responded. When asked if he was all right, the officer said there was no problem at all.

pczz has trouble reading and understanding English. He has admitted that he does not read posts and does not understand that Thailand does not have a Retirement visa, it is a long stay O-A visa.

He even thinks you live in Cambodia.
