Chiang Mai named world’s most polluted city for two days running

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

THE SMOG enveloping the North has made it unsafe to go outdoors, the Pollution Control Department (PCD) said yesterday.

Air-quality readings by the PCD showed that the amount of PM2.5 – fine particulate matter of less than 2.5 micrometre in diameter – had soared above the official safe level of 50 micrograms (mcg) per cubic metre of air in all nine provinces in the North.

Is this still caused by that annual rice husk burning or whatever? I've never been there, but surprising that they'd still allow it when pollution in that country is already at such insane levels.

that is too bad...
I flew in and out of there in July 2017 and the air was clear... I took several thousand pics for 2 weeks all over and it was perfect...
it was very agrarian from above ...
if they have a yearly burn off...it could explain it..
not like they are burning tires...
or the dump in chinaville...

I've lived through one of these, some years ago. When it's bad it's really bad. Never experienced labored breathing before that.

The problem is that a lot of the burning takes place in Myanmar, and even the burning that does happen in Thailand is done by hill tribes who've historically never been too concerned with the dictates of Bangkok.

Not saying I would never consider going back to CM because it does have its virtues but it would only be with the expectation that I'd need to spend the month of March somewhere else. Which is a pretty big concession really.

CHIANG MAI: Bangkok Airways has announced the suspension of its morning flights between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son until at least Saturday (Mar 20) as haze continues to plague northern provinces.

The suspension was deemed necessary as both airports were shrouded by thick haze which reduced visibility to two kilometres.

The aircraft used to service the route, an ATR-72, requires a minimum visibility of 6km to be able to take off and land safely.

The airline said 10 morning flights have been cancelled over the past five days, and the suspensions will continue until tomorrow because of the poor visibility.
