Just a heads up for those who aren't aware, the Thai Government has banned smoking at all Thai airports with effect 3rd Feb 2019. This includes all smoking rooms, the lounges where you could pay to use which had their own smoking lounges, and outside the airport.

Whilst I think it's a good initiative, it really sucks when you've got a long layover after a long ass flight. You can always go through the hassle of going through immigration and heading outside away from the terminal for a cheeky puff, but then you've got the even bigger hassle of fighting the hordes of Chinese re-entering through Security & Immigration.

Might be time to finally put some real effort into giving up the ciggies.

Cough it up! Cheapest Thai cigarettes set to be 93 baht from October
All cheap brands produced by the Thai Tobacco Monopoly will be at least 93 baht from October.
This means smokers will have to cough up an extra 33 baht per pack on five brands in ten categories.
Cigarettes currently priced in the 90 baht range may also increase in pric

I'm clean for nearly 2 years. I used to smoke 1-3 packs per day for 15 years depending on work or stress or any excuse I could find to have a smoke between smokes. If I can do it anybody can. Don't give up

I can confirm all the smoking lounges (crap holes that they were) at Suvarnabhumi were closed on my recent flight BKK to SGN. And I just happen to get really lucky that day. My flight was delayed 4 hours (yes, good old Vietjet). No cigs from 9 am check-in to well after 5 pm landing at SGN.

But there's more. A couple of restaurants in central Pattaya -- I stayed near Big C Extra -- had fresh "No Smoking" signs inside from Feb 3, even if their entire frontages were wide open. This was enforced by staff. This seemed to hit western-owned places, who face fines of 20,000 baht. Two nearby large Thai owned places had no signs, no worries -- because they know someone higher up the (police) chain, I was informed.

What's next in visitor-friendly Thailand?

Ugggg... Whatever happen to the good ole days of smoking indoors!!! Im sure if they really ran the numbers, the percent of those that die from smoking is by far a lower percent compared to the other vices... Dying of lung cancer is population control imo

It's getting hard to be a smoker these day but I have a new policy. If non smoking friends come to my place, when I smoke a cigarette, they have to wait outside.

Thanks for the heads up. I have stopped going to thai beaches since the smoking ban, sure I can manage to avoid thai airport. Flying via KL or even SGN can be ceaper these days for some reason.

fuck the good ole days, i still recall having to sit on flights for hours in smoke filled coffins!!

There only 20 beaches in the whole country, were smoking is banned ( patong is one)

Patong, Koh Khai Nok, Koh Khai Nai (Phuket); Hua Hin, Cha-Am, Khao Takiab (western province of Prachuap Khiri Khan); Pattaya, Jomtien, Bangsaen (eastern province of Chonburi) and Samila (Songkhla city).

I'm all for smoking bans!!!
