31 July 2018: 15 provinces warned of flash floods, landslides

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department has issued a warning for 15 provinces, five each in the North, Central and South, to beware of flash floods and landslides, department chief Chayapol Thitisak said this morning.

Mr Chayapol said continuous intensive rains and accumulated rainwater make these provinces vulnerable to being hit with flash floods and landslides.

The 15 provinces are Mae Hong Son, Chiang Rai, Nan, Tak and Phetchabun in the North; Kanchanaburi, Sa Kaeo, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat in the Central; and, Ranong, Phangnga, Krbi, Trang and Satun in the South.

Going to Thailand soon ? Take care. More heavy rains and flooding forecast over the next few days in all provinces.

Temporary Crisis Center orders all provinces prepare for flooding
4 September 2018
Thailand’s Temporary Crisis Center has ordered all provinces to prepare appropriate plans as more rains are forecast to hit the north, northeast, east and south between today and September 8.

The Temporary Crisis Center has indicated that heavy rains in the region over the past seven days have necessitated major dams in the Lao PDR to increase discharges. The higher release rates have put Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nakhon Panom, Mukdaharn and Ubon Ratchathani at risk of flooding...

Floods wreak havoc in South, more rain to come
19 December 2018
FLOODS HAVE ravaged three southern provinces over the past few days, leaving behind widespread damage and one person missing.

The hard-hit provinces are Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Phatthalung, according to the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

“We are now trying to locate the victim who went missing in Nakhon Si Thammarat,” the department said yesterday without giving any further details.

The department estimated that the floods had disrupted the lives of more than 166,000 people in the three southern provinces since Saturday.

Nakhon Si Thammarat was the hardest hit of the provinces. Due to high flood levels, many families have been evacuated and several schools closed, while train services have been rescheduled because some sections of track were swamped.

The Meteorological Department said downpours would continue across the South under the influence of a monsoon storm.

Phatthalung Governor Kukiat Wongkrapun yesterday warned locals to watch out for more flash floods, as further scattered rain was still likely.

“People living along waterways have to watch out because the weather bureau suggests that more heavy rain is coming,” he said.

He also warned locals living in mountainous areas to beware of possible landslides.

According to the Meteorological Department, Chumphon, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, Trang and Satun are also at risk of severe flooding.

As a tropical storm threatened to hit Thailand for the first time in more than 50 years a Facebook post explained what happened in 1962.

Thailand suffered a huge disaster when tropical storm Harriet hit the gulf of Thailand coast from Prajuab Khiri Khan to Narathiwat.

The Nakhon Sri Thammarat page said that the center of the storm was in that province. The storm was 300 kilometers across and had winds of 95 kmph.
There was no warning system in place when the storm hit on October 25th 1962.
