PHUKET – Thai police lieutenant Patiwat Yodkhwan told reporters on Tuesday that Thomas Keating, the boyfriend of Australian woman Emily Collie, who was killed when two jet skis crashed in waters off Phuket, will be charged with reckless driving causing death.

Thomas Keating, 22, and his girlfriend, Emily Jayne Collie, 20, were riding jet-skis near Kata Beach at 4:45pm on Sunday when they collided in the water at high speed leaving Ms Collie with severe injuries to her neck and shoulders and was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.

Mr Keating suffered minor injuries when the two jet-skis collided.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to Ms Collie’s family, as well as Mr Keating and his family.
Under an insurance policy that was taken out for the couple’s rental, Ms Collie’s family will be entitled to a payment of 50,000 Thai baht ($1867)...

Six Phuket jet-ski operators found operating without insurance, fined

It was discovered yesterday that six jet-ski operators working from Kata Beach on the island’s west coast were found to be renting out their watercraft without the required insurance.

The operators were fined, however, it was not disclosed how much.

The discovery was made yesterday (Feb 6) when officials from the Royal Thai Navy Third Area Command, Marine Police and Kata Police carried out checks on jet-ski operators at Kata Beach following the death of an Australian tourist who died when the jet-ski she had rented collided with that of her boyfriends on Sunday (Feb 5).

Thomas Keating, 22, and his girlfriend, Emily Jayne Collie, 20, were riding jet-skis near Kata Beach at 4:45pm on Sunday when they collided in the water at high speed leaving Ms Collie with severe injuries to her neck and shoulders.

Mr Keating said strong sunlight reflected off the sea and made it impossible to see the jet-ski of Ms Collie, leading to the crash.

Police yesterday confirmed that Mr Keating is to face charges of reckless driving causing death following the incident...

[Meanwhile, in Sihanoukville Cambodia, jetskis are probably all operating without any sort of license or insurance at all. There are accidents waiting to happen every day, but for the moment there are still relatively few jetskis.]

"It could have been the girlfriends fault."

No feathers in the cap for arresting a corpse.
