Too much chance of being horribly injured rather than being killed outright.
While a sergeant in the Education Corps during WW2, Anthony Burgess gave a talk entitled *The British Way and Purpose* to some servicemen.
One of his hearers was so moved by this that he went and put his head on a railway line (with the desired result.)
